The world is facing a time in history unlike any before – social revolution and pandemic in one. Stay-at-home orders have challenged some of us physically, some mentally, some financially or some a combination of the three. As we are continuously reminded of how important our health is (both mentally and physically), fitness is one of the best ways to stay on top of both.
Working out with a busy schedule was always tricky, but now that many of us are stuck at home – it seems even trickier!
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that exercising is one of the most important things you can do for your health. Exercise is crucial to weight management, reduces health risks, strengthens bones and muscles, and improves overall functionality. Physical activity has also been shown to boost immunity. While our usual ways of training may be closed down does not mean that we should throw in the towel when it comes to exercise and our daily routine. Going for that walk or lifting your dumbbells that you have in your garage mean something to you and to your health – DO not take it lightly.
In a recent study exercise and mental health during the early stages of the nationwide shutdown suggests that exercise is a game changer to our mental health. For individuals who maintained some form of exercise regimen during the early days of quarantine were found to be less depressed and more mentally resilient. Another recent study done by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that running for just 15 minutes or walking for an hour helps to decrease depression rates by 26%. Even small amounts of exercise can help boost mood, energy levels, promote better sleep and sex life.
With consistently changing restrictions, guidelines, and recommendations, it is a tremendous feat to tackle knowing what is “acceptable”, what is “safe” and how to simply be.
It’s time to conquer the snack cravings, stay hydrated (1 liter per 50 lbs you weigh), find a routine that works for you, and let your fitness routine switch up as life continues to change. Quarantine may have us feeling at a halt, but the exercise game does not have to follow along in that same category. Do what feels best for your body and listen. Some days will be more of a struggle than others and the stress of seeing at home workouts on social media will feel overwhelming. That’s okay, we get it. Re-start, re-focus, and get that heartrate up tomorrow.
