How do I pick the right Muay Thai gym for myself?

It is a very personal decision. It is important to decide what is most important for you to have in a gym and for your training. We believe that we can be that for you, as we take pride in the authenticity of our training and coaches.

What is the difference between Muay Thai and MMA?

Muay Thai is a stand-up striking sport that involves clinching. There is no grappling or ground fighting in Muay Thai. MMA is a combat sport based on stand -up striking and grappling. MMA includes many components of different combat sports.

What should I focus on as a beginner in Muay Thai?

Begin to develop the relationship with your coach and training partners. Focus on training consistently and nailing down your basic techniques.

Will I get injured?

All classes are designed to ensure the safety of our members. Like other sports, injuries are possible but we do everything we can to make sure you don’t get injured. Coaches are there to supervise and help enforce safety precautions. *Please note some instructional classes require additional protective gear to participate.

I haven’t worked out in forever. Do I need to be in shape?

BXNG classes are structured to be fun at any fitness level. Show up and keep showing up.

Is Muay Thai good for self-defense?

Absolutely. Muay Thai is a great art form for self-defense. You will learn techniques that could help you defend yourself if you ever needed it.

What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai is a striking art that originated in Thailand. It’s also known as the art of 8 limbs. You can use kicks, punches, knees, and elbows.

Do I have to meditate during a yoga class?

You are encouraged to do whatever you’d like during class. Some instructors will include focus on breath or other meditative practices. You do what is comfortable for you, but we do ask you to challenge yourself to do something out of your comfort zone!

What do I need to wear?

We usually recommend normal athletic gear that is most comfortable for you.

Can I eat before class?

We want to make sure that you are nourished before class; however, it is best to leave some time to digest before class. It usually recommended waiting an hour or so after eating before taking a yoga class.

What do I need to bring?

If you would like to bring your own mat, we encourage you to do that. If not, we have some mats that are available. We recommend bringing water to stay hydrated. Oh.. and yourself!

Am I allowed to take a boxing class and then yoga?

Yes! We love when our members cross train. Our yoga classes are included in your membership.

How is yoga different from just stretching?

Yoga is different from stretching or warming up by utilizing body movement sequences and breathing techniques to create a mind-body connection.

It’s been a long time since I have done yoga. Will I do okay?

It can always be tricky getting back into the game. We are focused on bringing a class that is tailored to all of our members.

Do I have to be flexible to take a yoga class?

No! But we have a feeling that if you continue to come to yoga class, you will become more flexible.

Do I need cycling shoes in order to take a class?

You do not need cycling shoes in order to take a class nor do we have shoes to rent. If you decide to join us for cycling classes regularly, we do recommend investing in some cycling shoes.

What happens if I can’t keep up during class?

The experience is YOURS! You know your body better than anyone else. It’s your ride - so adjust accordingly. Increase or decrease the resistance to whatever you need to push yourself (within reason!).

Is there a way to make the seat more comfortable?

In the beginning, it could take some time to get used to the seat. We’ve all been there. You can wear padded shorts or bring a cushioned seat. Usually, this only lasts a short while for most and take extra steps are usually unnecessary.

How many calories will I burn in each indoor cycle class?

It will vary per person, but you’re looking approximately at 500-800 calories per class!

Which locations are Indoor Cycling classes offered?

Our East Village (near Downtown San Diego) location is home to our indoor cycle classes.

How do I sign up for classes?

Will I learn real kickboxing technique or is it just a cardio class?

You will learn the fundamental techniques of kickboxing while getting an awesome cardio workout. The more you continue in the program, the more technique and combinations you will learn.

I don’t have wraps or gloves.

For your first class, wraps and gloves are on us. After that, you can purchase or rent exclusive BXNG gloves and wraps at the front desk.

I’ve never tried kickboxing before. Will I get hit?

No need to worry about getting hit! This is a cardio-based class, perfect for beginners or advanced students looking to build their endurance.

Do I need to be in good shape to start BJJ?

We all start from somewhere and the most important piece is that you simply start. You do not need to be in good shape to start off, but BJJ will certainly help you reach those goals.

How long does it take to get your black belt?

The journey to a black belt is an admirable one. Each person is unique but the journey usually lasts between 8-15 years.

Is BJJ safe?

We take the safety of our members very seriously. Our mat etiquette, class design, and practice processes help to ensure the safety of our students.

What should I wear for my first class?

If it is a no-gi class, we recommend a rash guard and shorts - whatever is the most comfortable for you!

Do I need a gi?

Some classes require a gi and some do not. We do have some extras available and can you find one to buy!

Can anyone try BJJ?

Yes! BJJ originated for those who are smaller to then learn defense against those who are bigger. It is a sport for anyone to try.

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

BJJ is one of the fastest growing martial arts. It is a sport, self-defense system, and fitness program. BJJ focuses on grappling and ground fighting with the goal of getting into a position to make an opponent to submit.

Are HIIT classes included in my membership?

YES! BURN classes are one of our most popular and are included in your membership. If you would like to take training to the next with personal training, there is an additional fee.

Does HIIT burn as many calories as running?

It depends on the length and time of both the HIIT workout and the run. Although, HIIT will help you to continue to burn calories throughout the entire day.

Why should I take HIIT?

Research shows that HIIT helps improve aerobic and anaerobic fitness, increase muscle mass, improve blood pressure/cholesterol levels, cardiovascular health and amp up mood.

How many times a week should I do HIIT / take BURN?

It depends on your activity level, other types of training, and goals but usually 3-4 times a week is recommended.

Don’t worry! We’ve got you. Your first class includes wraps and gloves on us. After that, we sell exclusive BXNG gloves and wraps in club.

Will I “tone up” from taking Grit?

Toning up is also a massive misconception in the fitness world. Although, taking Grit classes will help you lose fat and build muscle which will change your body composition.

How do I know how much to lift?

Consult with your trainer and they will help you figure out what weight is appropriate for you.

I’m scared to bulk up. Should I still take Grit?

Bulking up due to strength training is a myth! You should still take Grit if you’re wanting to focus on getting stronger.

Is Grit included in my membership?

There are pros and cons to both. It is a good idea to utilize both in your training.

I referred my friend to your gym and they joined. Do I get anything for that?

Thank you so much for recommending BXNG! We rely heavily on word-of-mouth referrals and sincerely appreciate your recommendation. As part of our Referral Rewards Program, if one of our members recommends someone and the person who was recommended joins our gym, we will add either 1 personal training session or 1 month's membership to your account. The choice is yours. Just make sure your friend or family member places your name on their form when they sign up.

I don’t own a pair of boxing gloves or wraps. Can I borrow some from you?

We will provide you with a pair of gloves and wraps for your first session with us. After that, you are required to bring your own for each class. If you need to borrow some after your first class, a $10 fee for gloves and $5 wraps for each will be charged. You can also purchase gloves in club!

Do you offer military discounts?

We offer 30-minute and 60-minute training sessions. (not 100% this is still true).

How do I track my progress with personal training?

We’ll be there along the way to help cheer you on and see where things are going well and where they are not. It will be up to you and your trainer to decide the best way to determine your actual progress.

Can I just do boxing personal training?

If boxing is on your mind, we’ve got you covered. We have trainers that specialize in boxing and can help you focus on cardio & technique.

I’ve never done personal training before. Can I still do it?

YES! All of our trainers are ready to meet you where you are and help get you to where you want to go.

Does personal training come with my membership?

We would love to help you get set up for personal training! Visit us at the front desk and we will get you set up with a complimentary session to find the right fit for you.

I was recently injured. Can I still practice Pilates?

We recommend that you consult with your doctor prior. Pilates was invented as a form of physical therapy and typically can be beneficial for injuries.

How often should I do Pilates a week?

It all depends on comfort, other forms of training, scheduling, etc. We recommend that 3x a week to become more highly skilled and reap the most benefits.

What is the difference between mat Pilates and using equipment?

Mat pilates focuses on Pilates exercises on the floor and requires supporting the body. Pilates equipment gives a frame to work with and the level of difficulty can be adjusted.

Is Pilates included in my membership?

To ensure our ability to keep members safe and provide tailored experiences, we offer private group and one-on-one sessions for an additional fee.

Do I need to be in shape to start Pilates?

Pilates machines look like a torture device. Why should I try it?

We totally get that pilates machines look like something out of a medieval novel. It is ironic because they can help you look and feel so good. We know they’re intimidating, but we say that it is worth a shot.
