Trainer Spotlight with Coach Caine

Coach Caine Gayle has been with The Boxing Club family since 2005. During his time here, he has trained many amateur and professional fighters including our current owner, Artem Sharoshkin. Caine specializes in Muay Thai, kickboxing, and weight training. He uses a combination of these elements to get his clients into their best physical shape! Keep reading to learn more about him and his training philosophy.

When and how did you get into Muay Thai?
I think it was sometime in 1997. [My girlfriend] Sabrina and I were in Poway going to Music Trader and a gym next door had a sign out front that said “Muay Thai”. Sabrina used to practice Muay Thai so she wanted to peek her head in to see who was teaching. It ended up being 2 guys that she used to train with, Selwin Reyes & Mike Suarez, so she went in to say hello. After that, she decided to go back later to train and I went with her in order to watch. The next time she went back, I decided to take a class and have been training ever since.

Why did you choose this as a career?
I skateboarded my whole life before that and I had no clue what I was going to do after that. After training for a few years and just being in the gym, I thought maybe I could teach because I loved the sport, so I started teaching at the gym I had been training at.

Drea-KickingWhat’s your training/coaching philosophy?
As far as the fighters that I train, I always want them to remain humble and respectful. As far as the clients that I train strictly for fitness purposes, they should train as hard as they can as often as they can. Don’t make any excuses for not being able to do it. If you want it bad enough, you should be able to do it.

What’s one piece of advice you always give your clients?
Dedication and hard work always pays off. Don’t cheat yourself in the gym or you won’t get the results you want.

On a regular week, what does your personal workout schedule look like?
I try to run 4-5 miles every other day. I also use weight vests, do bag work, use the stair stepper for cardio, and Thai pads if I can find someone to hold for me.

What are your hobbies outside of work?
Spending time with Sabrina, hanging out with my animals, and watching TiVo. I also volunteer on Sunday at Mostly Monkeys by feeding the animals, building cages, or whatever else they need me to do.
