Personal Accountability Tips: Be Your Own Manager

Staying on top of the seemingly never-ending to-do list can be extremely tricky to do without a manager over your shoulder. The good news is you don’t need a manager over your shoulder since you can be your own by mastering the art of personal accountability.

There is no question it has become ultra-common to run on an empty fuel tank or the “fuel low” light is just moments away from obnoxiously blinking yellow. Sometimes we get by with ignoring that obnoxious light and the taboo topic, but we don’t need to try to find out how many miles we realistically have left in the tank. A way to refuel (preferably before that blinking yellow light comes on) is to make sure to check-in with yourself as much as you check Instagram — let’s be honest.

Personal Accountability Tips

  1. Simply ask. Hey, how’s it going? What do YOU need today? It might seem child-like, but this basic task could be a real game-changer. It provides an opportunity for finding solutions and harmony among the crazy. Don’t knock it ‘till you try it, just saying.
  2. 5-limit to-do list + HOW. Long to-do lists breed anxiety and chaos. Prioritize your to-do list with the first five most important tasks ONLY. Then, write down how you will check these off your to-do list. Once you’ve completed all five, start again.
  3. Value your time & the time of others. Enough said.
  4. Seek feedback. How you see yourself and your progress may be totally different than those around you. Ask for their thoughts (always with a grain of salt) and allow for them to help give a different perspective.
  5. Reward yourself. Emphasizing your strengths, working on improving your weaknesses, and checking things off of your to-do lists calls for a reward. This doesn’t mean you go all out for each small victory, but rather you acknowledge a job well done. So, go buy those pair of shoes you have been wanting or take that half day off.
